This is an area for us to share what we've learned from playing this game while we wait for My Town 2 to challenge us again. I'm going to start by copying some advice I sent to Sutton Town which she found helpful.

DragonVale is more complex than Dragon Story. There is a wiki with lots of advice. I dumped a ton of money into the game, so it's hard to relate to having to wait. I was always speeding things up with the gems I bought.
It takes awhile to get a metal habitat. Once you do, you can mate a metal with a rust. They take 6 hours in breeding and another 6 to hatch which is relatively fast. They always produce a rust which sells for $1.65 million. On an upgraded farm, you can grow 10,000 treats for $500,000 in one minute. So, one rust gives you 30,000 treats in a couple of minutes. You need the treats to level up dragons. It takes just over 10,000 treats to go from 1 to 10.
From the beginning, start leveling up your dragons with treats so they earn more. The earth habitat, though not very attractive, lets you accumulate $75,000 before you stop earning. This is especially helpful over night.
It's not apparent at first, but once you have all the habitat types, the challenge will be to level up 50 dragons of each type. The Panlong dragon has 4 elements in it, so growing one gives credit to each of the 4 types. The Panlong is also an excellent earner, so breeding them early on is a good idea. I did not know this right away. They take 36 hours to breed and again to incubate, so wait until you have 2 breeding stations and extra nests.
At some point, you will be able to buy a Hibernation Cave. You can store dragons you don't need for breeding or earning in it, making room for a new breed coming out of incubation. I regret selling off some dragons before I understood I might need them for leveling up to the goal of 50 at level 10. There're is a goal beyond that, but not to worry until later.
Once you are allowed lots of habitats, it's worth going for a sun and moon. These quietly accumulate up to $750,000 and look very attractive. They are considered rare but are much easier to breed than the elusive rainbow.
A reason to shoot for a dragon of each type, keeping some in hibernation is that limited issue dragons coming in future will require 2 dragons we can't predict. We have 1 month to breed a limited. There are some beautiful dragons you and I cannot get, as their times have passed.

The Colosseum
At level 10, you can buy one for $50k. It builds in 4 hours. You can enter a dragon every 24 hours to earn medals and gems. It is important that your dragon match the element of the day. The level of the dragon matters.
Gold medals win 5 gems and more XP to help level up. Silver wins 2 gems.
The dragons in the Colosseum are not available for mating and do not earn income. The 24 hours in the Colosseum cannot be sped up.
This along with gem dragons and friends is how to earn gems without spending real money.

Decorating and other tips
There are 8 regular habitats (not including sun, moon, and rainbow). You don't need to get a sun, moon, or rainbow habitat until you hatch one and have extra habitats to spare. You get to have a new habitat with most levels up.
I find paths to be the cheapest and easiest way to decorate. Once you have a path section from the market, click on it and then the edit in the lower right. Now, you can choose from the 4 path options and start placing them. If you make a mistake, click on it, and your money will be restored as the section disappears.
It took me a lot of experimenting to find that the way to get rid of a narrow path section is to place another section of any type next to it.
Once you are easily able to earn $500,000, upgrade a farm. The most efficient way to get treats is the Sarjin Pepper. Cost is $500,000. In 1 minute, you have 10,000 treats. This is almost enough to take a dragon from level 1 to 10. I do this (or go higher now that I have silver shrines with most elements) before placing a dragon in the Colosseum.
Happy playing!

Boost Houses
There will be boost houses you can buy--I forget which level they start coming. Each boost house will add 20% to one habitat and reduce 20% from another. This will help you decide which habitats to move to another island. There need be no conflict.

Gem sharing--Please don't send me any right now, as I'm still spending money on the game. Players at lower levels have a greater need.
I have appreciated all your sharing though.

Holy crap guys! This must be what it's like when a developer listens to its fan base. Booyah please take notice. Quoted from their FB page: Based on recent comments, some of you want more dragons, some want more levels, and some want more habitats. We couldn't decide which of those things would make you happiest, so we decided to give you all three! Coming to DragonVale later today:
✔ Two New Dragons ✔ More Game Levels ✔ Extra Habitats
Something for everyone. Hooray!

Oh, fine... now you all got me curious, so I downloaded the silly game. I now have two earth, one plant, one fire, one large earth, one large plant, and one breeding habitat; several dragons which range from levels one through four; a tree, a flower box, and a stone path. I don't have the foggiest idea of what I'm doing, so now I have to read yet another thread.
Like I have free time anymore...
At least I can send out gifts from this one. I sent out three... if you got a gift from me, please let me know so I'm sure I did it right. Please also add me to your friends list. The name is the same as all the others - YarnGoddess23.
Thanks!

Yea Yarn!!! Glad you are joining us. I have no idea what I am doing either so don't feel lonely. I just started to check out what everyone was talking about and now I'm hooked. It is a great distraction while we wait on MT2 to add land or storage. That is way cool that they are listening to their players and adding new stuff like habitats and dragons! Not that I need anything else at the moment. There is SO much stuff to get already that it should keep me busy for a long time. I think I am going to have to break down and spend some real money soon to get that darn breeding island.

Thanks for the welcomes! Ocean, thank you, too, for the info. I've got it on a screen and will read it later.
Judy, thanks for letting me know that you did indeed get a gem. Like I said, I'm totally lost, but maybe after reading the stuff Ocean suggested, I'll have a better idea of the game. It's okay to have more than one of each habitat, right? And more then one of each dragon?

And more then one of each dragon? No problem, Yarn You can have multiple habitats and dragons. As you level up you get 1 additional habitat per level. Eventually you will have more dragons that can fit on all habitats and that's when micro management comes in. You can also just upgrade your small habitats to large ones at a certain level. There is a hibernation cave available at level 14 that lets you store up to 25 dragons. The capacity is upgradable up to 100 I believe. Some habitats can support up to 5 dragons while others can only hold one. Your main goal is to breed all the available hybrids and rare/limited dragons.

Lots of reading to do later. Judy, I have NO idea how I got there. Buying two packs of gems helped LOL. Mr. Goddess is going to shoot me.

Silver Shrines and beyond
My focus lately, besides the gem dragons, has been to get 50 level 10 dragons in each element so that the shrines change from bronze to silver. Reading in the wiki, I found this advice:
50 Panlong 50 Magnetic 50 Lichen
This combination will level up all 7 elements. However, the Panlong dragons take a loong time to hatch. With 2 breeding stations and 4 nests, I'm going for 1 a day or every other day.
While working today to get 50 metal, I created some Magnetic as recommended, and some Metal, as I got more xp for the Metal and was close to leveling up.
The hibernation cave at max holds 100, so I won't be able to have 50 Panlong, Magnetic, and Lichen at the same time. The advice is to sell off the Panlong on the way to the other two. I like how the Panlong earn in Earth habitats, so I will keep several there.
To get to Gold from Silver will take 50 dragons to level 15. This is so expensive in treats that it makes sense to use the hybrids to maximize results.
I was eager to get the Metal shrine to silver so I could level up my 2 cash cows, AMetal and ARust. My list of dragons is long, and I wanted to locate these quickly. Normally 12 gems to breed and hatch immediately for $1,650,000. I need the cash to buy Sarjin for 10,000 treats in 1 minute (needs Huge Farm). I have upgraded one of my breeding stations, so I save 1 gem in breeding time.
Did you know you can rename dragons? Locate one in a habitat or hibernation, click on it and click on the name.

You really don't need 50 each. Chances are you already have a bunch of hybrids so that should be at least 15-30 dragons of each type. Panlongs are the best because they cover four elements. If you already have 30 plant, 25 fire, etc. you'll only need 20-25 panlongs. Most of us cant level at your blazing speed and shrines are really something that's best saved for the endgame. There are also at least two limited dragons every month that cover 2-4 elements and can go a long way towards the shrines as well. Also if you have the Bloom it is a much better option than Lichen.
