I am obsessed with a game that rewards you for having businesses with high popularity scores, yet I seek out and most enjoy discovering the out of the way, hole-in-the-wall franchises where there are no lines of people to contend with. Give me the seaside bar on the water, the off the wall boutique with great stuff for my lady, the retail store with great stuff, great deals and no lines of people to content with.
But the draw of MT2 to build my town as I desire is powerful, and so I do what is necessary to obtain the funds (lots of SEs and conversions of all types of businesses into offices for the moment) as a means to a desired end.
But will I ultimately come back to who I think I am or will I sell out for the money, because the draw of having things and money is too overwhelming?

Very thoughtful! Haha. I was like you busting out the SE's then decided to sell them all and create little cul-de-sacs for my town folk! Lol!
On a slight tangent, not that I'm religious AT ALL, I consider myself to be an atheist, but Booyah should include places of worship too.....ie. churches, temples, synagogues, mosques and suchlike, even a place for scientologists, lol!

We do have the Sky Cathedral (which is actually one of my favorites, aesthetically speaking).
I'm much like you guys. I started out trying to make the "perfect little town" and then I saw the leaderboards! And then it was all about numbers and power. Now I am 2 Trillion coins and am back to looking for inspiration for my "rebuilding" phase. But I think I'm still going to stick with high value businesses, since you can still use any skin to make them look pleasing.

When I started playing I was hell bent on only building local businesses (in Seattle). Then the popularity bug bit me and I started getting competitive. Since there weren't enough popular businesses in Seattle, I branched out to San Francisco. I'm willing to have other west coast businesses but can't bring myself to have any from the east coast or Europe. That's where I drew the line. I just have to accept I'll never be on the leader board in terms of business popularity.....or own the Eiffel Tower.

I started out the same way. My businesses were all level 10 but not one of them over 500 on popularity. I come from a small town. Once I found this forum I decided to switch it up and thought of something that I liked. Apple Stores. I have searched in dozens of cities and been through countless towns searching them out. Which has worked out really well since there is a good skin for them and some of them are pretty popular as well. I have almost every wonder even though they don't help me when I only own retail and one office business. I also have almost every house and community building just to have them. I kind of met in the middle between small town and popularity mogul.

Hidido!! I, too, started out small not knowing about being able to hop, skip, and jusmp around later. I still have the 2 gingerbread houses that I bought and lived in for awhile. Then here came the SE trick. I still have them (about 35). I can not get rid of my mansions, either. I have a plan to keep my town rich, but I also want the other side of town where I can get tid of the metal businesses and buy more businesses and plant flowers, and have lots of water surrounding things. Funny, My mom was a RN, my dad was a DR. We had money, but I didn't know any better growing up. I work two jobs and my husband works. My husband and I balance each other out. BUT, I still have those SE and they are making me alot of money. I want to decdorate more, but at the same time I am deleating and thinking about adding about 6 more SE......for the time being for a couple more days before easter runs out and then I will deleate them and plant some stuff. Isn't it funney how the mind thinks or acts? ?? Oh well, I just LOVE THIS TOWN!!!!! Just wish we had more land so I guess I keep hoarding money for land. I am sure I will be expensive.

The dichotomy of popularity vs uniqueness in this game breaks down in that to operate in the game one needs funds. I tried to build a unique home-town flavor town, with local businesses but it took too much time. Money generated from these small local businesses was not enough to play the game comfortably. I created two towns (on two devices of course)one with a high popularity and has a high earning, the other with local flavor. I franchised/ subsidized the local town with the higher earner so I can expand reasonably. That being said I tend to play the popular town more than the local town.

Continuing to seek balance. Maintaining the income producing Office businesses, while indulging in more of the places/businesses that have some meaning or are just plain cool.
The best bar name so far is the Winking Lizard Tavern (they actually have large lizard in a glass cage by the entrance). Popularity sucks, but I don't care, its a great name.
One of the best concerts I ever saw was at the Ohio Theatre (Bruce Springsteen-front row balcony, but I don't think there is a bad seat in that place).
I've got both Ohio Stadium and Michigan Stadium within an inch of each other, just because it seemed like a poetic/karma thing to do.
Starting to delete a few things and move some things around to make room for more luxury apartments, but I notice I have to be careful about the high rises blocking the view of the ground level stuff. I think once the coinage adds up enough, I'll do some weeding and create more open space.
Finally, it's amazing that when Mt. Fuji is going off and the whole city is shaking, that the Bullet Train doesn't go off the track; no water splashes out of the Hot Springs; and the sports game players don't miss a shot.

I love looking at everyone's towns and seeing how unique they all are. Its obvious that everyone has different things they are trying to achieve so what about you? What is the most important thing to you when you play? * Popularity - I just want to be loved * SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!! * A collector - I want one of everything. * Asthetics - I don't care about the rest it just has to look fantastic ;D * The challenge - Game centre achievements or booyah goals. * Realism - No aliens for me, I want it to look like a place you could really go to * Quirky - The weirder the better or something no one else has. * Other ?

I have always tried to make my town as 'real' as possible.
Now there are a few items that kinda destroy that, (the giant snowglobe, dragon, etc) but I think for the most part, my town is kinda functional.
I have my 'rich area', my 'downtown', my 'entertainment strip', my 'retro' area, and then I tried to make like a 'Disney' area with the castle, dragon and fairground items.
I try to have 1 of everything that I like, and not too many multiples of anything. I love seeing what other people have done to their towns too!

We have so many new players that I just had to revive this thread and see if it gets any action!
MyTown Raven Crest has gone several directions since I joined the forum! I never went the high popularity business route - did get 3 moderate high just to take advantage of franchising bucks! But all the rest of the businesses mean something to me so !!!! My "vision" of my perfect town has so changed! Booyahs additions offered enough for me to develop areas like a farmers market and a rural area! Currently it's ugly cuz I'm building up coin for either more land or a rainy day!

I think it's the capitalist nature of the program. People are rewarded with more coins if they have higher popularity businesses. The large number of people needing the income makes sure that the higher popularity businesses maintain their high popularity and sky rocket, leaving local businesses in the dumps. It's the same idea behind globalisation and large multi-national corporations IRL.
Booyah could easily fix this by using a cap on business popularity. If businesses were capped at, say, 10,000 popularity people could still get insane coin income but the love would be spread out and more business could get higher popularity.
It's a natural conclusion of the game that big businesses win. It just doesn't make any sense to me why the most popular businesses are the most popular. Why is Facebook's home office popular and Nike's not? The list is skewed by "Mytown, CA", but who has ever heard of Creperie O'Regal Valengaux, Paris before playing this game? Why not the Eiffel Tower?
This forum community has incredible power, and if everyone here decided to move the game a certain way, others would be forced to follow. But, just like IRL, greed will win out, I think. No income, no play, after all.

Skyton- I think you're right when it comes to the popularity of some of these (before this game) unknown businesses. The original players had to start somewhere, so I'm guessing those were some of the first businesses or something.
Just like in real life, some of us will retire. I'd say I'm in retirement mode. I have a nest egg and being the owner of big businesses or even owning 36 businesses (I'm up to 15 and that's a lot) doesn't suit my town. Just give me something with a cool name or a *little memory* and I'm sold. Leave the big businesses for the newbies to carry on the legacy.

Afraid I may never be able to actually create my dream town...not smart or disciplined enough! Love Snibull's utopian look! Guess Id like defined neighborhoods with appropriate decor and green space between. Of course the addict in me also wants 1 of about everything....except wizards and futuristic stuff.

I don't seem to like the silly stuff...at leas t how it is for me. I'd like a realistic, comfortable town. That's going to be a chore since some of the money makers are sort of weird...

With the exception of the harry potter forest, I have gone for a real town arrangement. I have my central business district, farmland (combined with the cooking school, greenhouse and farmers market), shopping area, the athletic centre/country club, amusement park/water park, housing subdivision and beach w/o water.
For the businesses, I have placed an emphasis on popularity. I keep breaking my own promise to myself that I'm done and not going to start developing any more businesses (I keep a few in storage and I rotate them in and out so to move them up a level or 2).
For buying the community and decorations, I just go for what the pieces I like. The pieces I bought just to get through the goal list or I wasn't sure about have ended up being deleted as space got tighter.
I don't really want them to add more goals. I'm having fun with my own goals (getting all my businesses to level 10, getting enough xp to get through 74, coin generation in preparation for extra land and helping other mayors when I can)

Ya, I've gone for the real/aesthetic side of things. Farmland, suburbs, central town, woods and AsiaPacificTown , so far. Still have to work on my millionaire's area, central park, futuristic area, and theme park. My theme park's gonna be InSaNe though. I have been stacking NDs and high-rise condos, though, just to build up some capital. These'll be gone by the end of the week, I hope.
