So this is something I do all season long - have a small pot on the back of your stove - a cup of water in it (add more as needed) Throw in a cinnamon stick - a tablespoon of whole cloves - tablespoon of whole allspice - whatever you want really - Gently simmer it all day long adding water as needed - your house will smell like Christmas AND like you've been working in the kitchen all day One batch lasts a couple of days - then start over fresh!

Love this I do it as we'll but I sometimes use apple cider and cut up oranges. You are so right Raven when people come to visit they think you have been cooking and your house smells fantastic.

OMG! I read this and thought hmmm, I will definitely forget about it being on the stove and then I thought about having to dig my cooking pot out of the cabinet. Either of those may end up scaring (add: or scarring) the children.
For scenting the home during the holidays, I fill the bottom of the fireplace (which we don't use) with cinnamon scented pine cones and buy those scented cinnamon brooms from the grocery store.

From Pickwick Papers.
CHARLES DICKENS
And numerous indeed are the hearts to which Christmas brings a brief season of happiness and enjoyment. How many families whose members have been dispersed and scattered far and wide, in the restless struggles of life, are then re-united, and meet once again in that happy state of companionship and mutual good-will, which is a source of such pure and unalloyed delight, and one so incompatible with the cares and sorrows of the world, that the religious belief of the most civilized nations, and the rude traditions of the roughest savages, alike number it among the first joys of a future state of existence, provided for the blest and happy! How many old recollections, and how many dormant sympathies, does Christmas time awaken!
We write these words now, many miles distant from the spot at which, year after year, we met on that day, a merry and joyous circle. Many of the hearts that throb so gaily then, have ceased to beat; many of the looks that shone so brightly then, have ceased to glow; the hands we grasped, have grown cold; the eyes we sought, have hid their lustre in the grave; and yet the old house, the room, the merry voices and smiling faces, the jest, the laugh, the most minute and trivial circumstance connected with those happy meetings, crowd upon our mind at each recurrence of the season, as if the last assemblage had been but yesterday. Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childish days, that can recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth, and transport the sailor and the traveller, thousands of miles away, back to his own fireside and his quiet home!

Ok - I know lots of you live in bigger towns and have beautiful christmas displays! So I have to set the scene for this picture You are driving north! Wayyyy north! For whatever reason not a lot of daylight hours so you have been driving in the dark for 4 hours - you only saw two sets of lights at small gas put stops - no other electricity at all - only dark - a "very" few other vehicles. Then out the darkness you reach "my" town!!!! And see these beautiful blue lights all strung up on our Main Street ( which is the Alaska Highway) it is soooo beautiful Attachments:
