I also would like to point out that with the update the delay is back so if you are quick enough you can franchise a business for the higher value before it drops. I have tried it twice now and it is working.
I know it was still working before but it took a few tries. I was able to do it today on my first two tries.

OK, Chilli - it's looks like we've done it! Thank you, Sir! The magic number appears to be 3000. I just snagged your Dominoes for a cool million coins and it was much easier then before. Got it on the first try. I had it before at about 35k popularity and am now at 135k. Has anybody ever run the numbers on popularity vs job payout? Does a 100k popularity business generate twice the income of a 50k business all other things equal?

Maybe it has to do with how busy the server is. I've been trying this afternoon but the prices have been changing like lightning and I haven't been able to snag one at the high value. It was much easier this morning.

Sorry to put a spanner in the works of all these calculations. But yesterday Chilli franchised one of my businesses at approx. 9000 popularity, yet I only received 46 bucks. Yet previously on the same business I had received 50 at the time of each franchise.
So how does that make any sense?

Your popularity is not the same as the "market" popularity to buy the business. The market value can go up and down with some big fluctuations where your value will usually only change a little bit. If the market value drops below what appears to be 3000 when Chilli franchises your business, then you will get less then 50 bucks.

First post in about a week so sorry if it's been noted before as this is the first thread I've read.
Chill has been franchising my Apple Store and over the last weekend, I'm only getting 35 bucks for it. Has the PM been attacking again?

If you franchise an artificially high popularity business and change the skin the business will revert back to the "market popularity". I just spent 9 million coins to franchise a business with over 900k popularity. It showed up in my stats as 900k and the level 1 job was about $150 for 3 min. I changed the skin to an entertainment building from a restaurant. I decided I didn't like it and changed it back to what it came with. Then I noticed the job value was only $99. I checked my stats and the popularity dropped to 26k! I checked all the other businesses I recently purchased and only Dominoes pizza had significantly dropped its value from what I bought it for and that is the only other business that I changed skins on. So if you manage to click fast enough, don't change the skin!

I keep waiting for some lag so I can try the trick of grabbing high population businesses. So far no luck but I'm ready the next time the servers slow down.

I recently franchised mixer bar and quick at around 800k each...left the skin as is for mixer bar and changed the skin for quick, both went down to 30k/100k respectively the following day. I refranchised it again the next day...this time I changed both their skins and their high pop stayed the same. Another member of this forum had the same biz and is currently doing the SE trick, had his skins changed to offices and his high pop hasn't dropped. So is it a coincidence? I really can't say. The popularity monster works in mysterious ways. JenniOR, 3G=lag Wifi=no lag

I have franchised many high pop businesses and changed them to offices right away. That has never hurt the pop. What has hurt pop is checking in directly after purchasing. I don't know exactly how it works. But several times I've checked in on new purchases and had a huge pop drop. Yesterday all I did was hit the check in button on the town screen. I didn't actually check in anywhere. And it killed the pop on my last purchased business. I think there's some sort of wait time because I've checked in other times and it's been fine. I think there's a correlation here. I've been playing with location services off for mt2 as well. This could also be a factor.

Anything is possible in this game. Strange things happen to some and not to others. I sold and re-bought the same business kept the skin the same and the popularity has stayed at the original high level. I'm going to leave it alone for now.

So that same restaurant I bought at over 900k the other day dropped again to 27k and another business had a huge drop and I didn't mess with any of their skins. I also didn't check in either. Now I'm wondering if Booyah isn't just scanning for super hi pop businesses and knocking them down to size. It's only happened to a few but there doesn't seem to be a pattern. I just bought a business for 29 million coins with 2.9 million popularity. It will be interesting to see if it stays there.

the popularity total does not seem to solely be the sum of all the popularities of the businesses...
best example of this is the guy in 1st place (Macho alfa), his businesses aren't the most popular, and their popularities certainly don't add up to his total popularity score (over 6 Billion!)
how can his score be explained?

He hacked his scores through a jailbroken device. People have also done this with coins and bucks. The most extreme example is Wonderland with unreleased content in his town.

This is all fascinating. It reminds me of the housing bubble, as well as the Silicon Valley bubble. Both were pretty ugly when they burst, and I got smacked by both.
As for the lag issue, I'm afraid that doesn't hold water with me. I've had plenty of lag with WiFi and none with 3G; other times, the reverse is true. Yet another mystery.
Sol, I'm truly impressed with all those calculations. I've had most of my businesses drop substantially, too. I've been trying to get a high pop business (just so I have one), but by the time my brain registers the number, I'm too slow on the franchise. Maybe some day...
