As of right now, the maximum number of businesses you can have in your town is 36. The next population threshold is 5,000,000,000!

... and just to note ...
once you have reached the population level that allows you the 36 business AND you have acquired all 36 of those businesses, you can remove the game items that gave you the population in the first place, without losing any of the businesses. BUT if you lower your population, and then remove a business, you will need to increase your population level back up to the 36 business level before acquiring a new business.

If I sell a business can I buy one right away or do I have to build the population back up? And thanks for all your tips I've made more in the past two days since I started playing 4 months ago.

If your population drops below the required population for the level you are on - then yes, you will need to return your population to the minimum for that level to re-add a business.

What is the minimum population needed to have 36 businesses? I forgot what it was. I've been deleting some taxi stands and subway stations to free up some space but I want to stay above that number in case I delete a business to buy another.

I'm at the beginning stages of business #36. Looks like it's around 890k.

Booyah might not have expected anyone to actually have managed to collect 36 businesses. Let's see what the next update will bring! ======================================= Selling off a Business licat ProBoards Post #1062 Feb 6, 2012, 05:45 PM If you sell off anything that has population associated with it, that population number will be deducted. e.g., the observatory gives 4,000 population. If it is sold, 4,000 will be deducted from your population count. If you are at 267,000 population, and sell off a business, you don't lose that status. A business does not have population associated with it, so you won't drop below 267,000 population. After you sell a business, and then check your Menu>Stats you will see a half built building labeled "vacancy"; you will be able to immediately buy or franchise another business to fill that vacancy.
But the replacement business will 1) need to be built which typically takes 24 hours and 2) when it does open, it will be at level 1 and you will have to complete jobs to level it up.
Keep in mind, it is not necessarily a simple deduction of the population or the revenue amount because they are affected by any Wonders you own. e.g. The observatory gives 4K-if you own one SpacePort (+20% pop), the deduct will actually be 4,800 and if you own many SPs, the deduction is greater.
I've done a bunch of buying and selling and as far as I can tell, this seems to be true.

If you sell off stuff, your population will decrease. Your existing businesses will not be affected. However, if you sell a business, you will lose that slot and will have to increase your population again to hit the next threshold.
In other words, your population is "live". Whatever level shows on your game is the level you are at.
I hope this makes sense.
BTW - the most businesses you can have right now is 36. They set the next population threshold after that to 5,000,000,000.

Juan the last update took the businesses from 36 - 40. I don't think Booyah is trying to fool you - not sure why you got the update notice a second time!

There is an update in the apple appl store right now for that. I got it on both my devices. I will not do the update. Learned my lesson after that "travel" update thing!
Do you notice anything different/new after you updated it?

Very weird. I did the update right away, and to tell you no lie; for a few mine tus I was exited that we were going to have more businesses to invest on. Too bad.
