I could murder a jug of beer now even though I am a wine drinker. (Resists temptation for bad pun with all willpower available).

Hey all, I'd like to ask everyone to take a minute to send your thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by the bombings today in Boston. Fortunately, my friends and family have been accounted for and are ok. Some of my kids' friends had been in the area earlier in the day, but they had already left. If anyone is trying to get touch with anyone in or around the Boston area, cell towers are overwhelmed so your best bet is to try text or twitter. There has also been word that Verizon land lines have gone down as well.

Hey Leilani. Thanks for highlighting that there are a lot of people out there worrying about their family and friends. My thoughts are with them all, and I can only pray that this is an isolated incident, with those responsible being caught and held to account.

Glad you and yours are OK, Leilani. It is such a shame. The Boston marathon is such a nice global event and has been for the last twenty years in such a beautiful city, it just makes you want to cry. I did it in maybe 95 or 96 (3 hrs 23), can't remember exactly, but that was in a different world.

Such a sad incident - it just keeps the terrorism threat always just near the surface of awareness! Derek! So impressed! A marathoner!!!

Thanks guys. I had to bring my daughter back into the city for class this morning since we weren't going to attempt to get there last night. It was very surreal. Very little traffic, few pedestrians, just strange like everyone had left the city. Her school is in the Fenway Park area, if anyone of you have been to that area you probably noticed that it is busy just about all the time. The police and military response has been immense. Something like this raises so many questions, but one thing I know for certain is Boston is an extremely resilient city, its citizens are strong and we have (and will continue to) come together to support one another.
Derek, I'm impressed not only that you ran the Boston Marathon but with your time. I too have crossed the finish; although, I have to admit it was because I was walking from where I had parked to where I needed to be.

Actually I did a bunch and that is my worst time. I hit the wall and the last mile took me half an hour, what with the uncontrollable salivating, stumbling over and dry retching. I used to be quite athletic before a thyroid problem wrecked my health around 2003.
Hope everything is OK. That story about the eight year old boy is so sad. Our little fella is just the same, running everywhere and climbing everything.

We traditionally drink one of these little babies for our 21sts. Our idiotic mates normally fill them up with far more toxic stuff than beer. It's known as a "yard glass" because it s around a yard long, and has about 1.5 litres of beer in it (or beer mixed with the hard stuff). Traditionally the birthday victim's mates will turn it while he is drinking to keep it aerated. I haven't done it myself, but I have seen a fair few done, and I hear that the bulb at the bottom is the killer, because you feel like you've almost got there, then suddenly you get a huge gulp at once.
